FAQ
How are our feather earrings different from other feather earrings?
Our feathers are 100% natural, ethically-sourced from our organic farm, sustainable, and from free-range heritage breed chickens. Most companies that sell feathers and feather earrings use synthetic or dyed feathers with chemicals. Others source their earrings from caged birds that are not ethically treated. We collect our feathers from our hens as they fall, as well as when a bird dies of natural causes. Our chickens are not raised for meat; they are raised for eggs.
How do I care for my feather earrings?
Feathers are really easy to take care of as oil and dirt are naturally repelled from them. Although rarely needed, you may spot clean with a cloth and water. Never use soap as this removes the natural oils from the feathers. The natural oils are what keep the feathers easy to clean and repel dirt.
Our earrings consist of 925 sterling silver, so like any silver, they will tarnish over time and can be brought back to their original lustre using a silver polishing cloth.
My feathers have curled slightly from wear. How can I straighten them?
Some of the longer and finer feathers may curl from the heat of your body, as they do on chickens. We use a regular iron (being as gentle as possible), to straighten them out. Start on a mid-heat first and then adjust to a higher heat if needed. Or simply enjoy the slight curl like the chickens do!
My feathers have imperfections. Is this normal?
No two feathers are identical. We spend much time curating each pair. We love that our chickens are roaming around in fields and in trees, and so there may be things that you won’t see on other earrings that are sold online. Because our feathers aren’t synthetic, dyed or chemically-treated, please expect them to be unique and not “perfect”.
My feather earrings arrived with some feathers slightly separated. Can I fix this?
Yes! If the feathers separate, just run your fingers over them until they go back together. Occasionally you’ll see feathers that may not want to be together at one place. That’s ok too – just enjoy the natural way that the chick grew them.
